By James Tissot
French painter Tissot fought in the Franco-Prussian War but after falling under suspicion as a Communard left Paris for London. Here he met his companion Kathleen Newton who features in this painting with her children, Cecil George and Violet and her niece Lilian Hervey. The picture was exhibited but Tissot kept it as a memorial until Kathleen’s death in 1882.
